A Surprise

      This morning I saw a hummingbird for the first time in my backyard of almost 3 years.  She was checking out my orange marigold plant, the only living thing in our two elevated garden beds. This spring I tried growing marigolds to fill one of the beds but the seedlings didn't make it.  However, I noticed that one I had not sprouted had  grown in the planter they were in last year. This volunteer is now about 4 times bigger than any that I grew then!   This is where I saw the hummingbird feeding.  Sometimes gardens give us pleasant surprises!

      Earlier this week, feeling very sore, tired and grumpy, I decided to rest and escape with an episode of a Chinese drama I'm watching, The Longest Promise.   I'm a fan of xianxia, a genre of Chinese fantasy dramas set in ancient China, one of the reasons being that  I sometimes find  moral messages in them.  The stories are kind of like extended fables or fairy tales.        An episode I recently watched took place in the Abyss of Resentment.  This place was a lower world, part of what one might think of as hell.  It was dark and barren, with foreboding cliffs, dangerous narrow paths and an extremely deep abyss, the bottom of which was obscured by fog or smoke.  The escape route crossed a hanging bridge made of  long, large twisted tree branches all of which were  barren.  The  path had many gaps of varying sizes between the twists and uneven bumps.      A man and youn...

Turkeys on the Run

      One of my morning walks begins at a boat landing on a creek which leads out to the Ohio River.  The van is parked at the landing and I walk up the road away from it to a regular path near the river.   This road is usually deserted except for a few very modest homes on the river side.  The area is a mix of woodland and brush and sometimes you can  see turkeys.  Today the drive to the landing followed five of them.  I expected them to cross the road as they have done before --but no, they just ran away straight down the middle of road, toward the landing, looking quite silly! Moon Garden

            Acouple of weeks ago I was with some family members at a Louisville restaurant to celebrate my birthday.  We arrived early for dinner so it was quiet where we were seated; this enabled me to take in the ambience, which really "spoke" to me.  I loved it...dark green, black and white flooring, soft lighting, low key slow vocal music, non-matching dinnerware, some antiques and some art deco decor.  I faced a bar which was lined with partially filled glass bottles of liquors and vases of tall white flowers.  It was beautiful (and I don't drink, let alone think bottles of liquor are beautiful).  The ambience completely took me in. I just sat there enjoying the moment and soaking in the mood.  Everything was just right.      When we finished I was given this flower to take home.  I was told to put it in about an inch of water and it would continue to bloom.  I did so.  At that time the white ...
