Turn on the Light

Image
I've been feeling a bit spiritually disconnected lately.  When I get like this I feel somewhat depressed and  find it difficult to discipline myself to read and study scriptures first thing in the morning.  I'm more easily distracted and scattered.        As I was sitting on the edge of my bed early this morning stretching my foot I suddenly had this thought pop into my head-- "Turn on the light".  It was not dark out;  I immediately suspected that this was a spiritual message to me to turn on "spiritual Light" in the morning.  In other words, work on better control of my scripture time in the morning and I will be turning on the needed Light in my life.  It was motivating!         I thought of the verse in Psalm 119:105 which states "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (KJV Bible).  I then did s short study of Psalm 119 for some context and discovered t...

Making Space

Image
While thinking about goals for a class I'm taking I had this thought-provoking idea--"make space for other people".         A couple of years ago I learned about catching the space between thoughts and using it to  redirect worrisome and anxious thoughts which sometimes  go around and around in my head, often without me realizing what's happening until I'm stuck in them.  I found the idea of mind-space very intriguing so I decided to practice catching my thoughts  and changing them.  It was a good exercise; it especially helped me  become aware that there was this space, and  tiny though it was,  I could take advantage of it and refocus. The more I tried it, the earlier I was able to perceive what was going on in my head and shift my thinking!  The idea "make space for other people" caught my attention when I remembered this experience.      While pondering "peo...

Moon Garden

Image
Acouple of weeks ago I was with some family members at a Louisville restaurant to celebrate my birthday.  We arrived early for dinner so it was quiet where we were seated; this enabled me to take in the ambience, which really "spoke" to me.  I loved it...dark green, black and white flooring, soft lighting, low key slow vocal music, non-matching dinnerware, some antiques and some art deco decor.  I faced a bar which was lined with partially filled glass bottles of liquors and vases of tall white flowers.  It was beautiful (and I don't drink, let alone think bottles of liquor are beautiful).  The ambience completely took me in. I just sat there enjoying the moment and soaking in the mood.  Everything was just right.      When we finished I was given this flower to take home.  I was told to put it in about an inch of water and it would continue to bloom.  I did so.  At that time the white ...

Bridge View

Image
Lately the weather has been very dry where I live.  Most morning walks pass over a creek which empties into the Ohio River.  Usually it is a river--right now it's a creek so low that from the bridge above I could see deer walking across.  The picture above shows two of them saying hello, but there was a blue heron nearby, unseen by me until I enlarged the photo.  Very cool...a lovely surprise!  It's very sad to see the water so low, but this treat was made possible by it!

Over the Dike

Image
During one of my recent walks I took the photo above.  The green hill is a  dike along the Ohio River; the trail is on the river side. I thought about the church as a symbol of God and  how it takes effort to connect to Him, as represented by climbing to the top of the dike.  To meet God we need to climb higher -- stretch our spirits toward Him.        In thinking  of the dike I'm reminded of the old animated movie The Secret of NIMH  and the owl's counsel to Mrs. Brisby-a mouse-who was asking him for a way to save her family from the spring plow. The old owl told her to move her family to the lee of the stone.  The lee of the stone was the backside of a nearby rock in the field she lived in; the spring plowing was about to begin and the stone would protect her home from being destroyed by it.  Dikes protect us from floods, but only on the far side.  Climb to the safe side...

A Surprise

Image
This morning I saw a hummingbird for the first time in my backyard of almost 3 years.  She was checking out my orange marigold plant, the only living thing in our two elevated garden beds. This spring I tried growing marigolds to fill one of the beds but the seedlings didn't make it.  However, I noticed that one I had not sprouted had  grown in the planter they were in last year. This volunteer is now about 4 times bigger than any that I grew then!   This is where I saw the hummingbird feeding.  Sometimes gardens give us pleasant surprises!

Words and Thoughts

Image
Earlier this week, feeling very sore, tired and grumpy, I decided to rest and escape with an episode of a Chinese drama I'm watching, The Longest Promise.   I'm a fan of xianxia, a genre of Chinese fantasy dramas set in ancient China, one of the reasons being that  I sometimes find  moral messages in them.  The stories are kind of like extended fables or fairy tales.        An episode I recently watched took place in the Abyss of Resentment.  This place was a lower world, part of what one might think of as hell.  It was dark and barren, with foreboding cliffs, dangerous narrow paths and an extremely deep abyss, the bottom of which was obscured by fog or smoke.  The escape route crossed a hanging bridge made of  long, large twisted tree branches all of which were  barren.  The  path had many gaps of varying sizes between the twists and uneven bumps.      A man and youn...
